Have they ever tried to find a cure for mental retardation?

Q: I'm not trying to be funny or anything. I know there has been research done on "fragile-x" in particular, but has there been any advancements? Wouldn't this research be helped by stem cell research? I was just curious, I'm really not trying to offend anyone. I personally think it should be something more reasearched you know? And it seems like stem cell reaserch could be used to possible work on chromosomes and alter dna. Thanks for the answer :), it informed me alot.

A: the problem is that mental retardation can be caused by many things. The march of dimes promotes prevention by encouraging moms to eat a diet rich in folic acid and avoid dangerous substances like cigarette smoke and alchohol(plus all the other nasty drugs) and getting quality prenatal care. Research for each cause is ongoing and currently the only treatment is early age intervention therapy like the birth to 3 programs in many states. the therapies are pretty amazing but I don't know if theres been any break throughs yet. Stem cell research mostly focuses on things like cancer
