What is draft (when opening your windows)? How does it get you sick?

Q:

A: This is an old common myth that grandparents normally tell you. "Shut the door you'll catch a draft!" They mean those cold little gusts of wind that come in through the cracks under your doors or through open windows, and people believe this can make you sick because people associate being cold with having a cold or flu. The real reason we get colds and flu slightly more in winter is because we tend to stay indoors together in warm rooms, spreading any virus to each other a lot easier. You will not get sick from feeling a draft. You just might feel a bit chilly.
