A: Epinephrine is used in severe allergic reactions; anaphylactic shock. It is the active ingredient in the Epi Pen. It can be used in the gums during some dental procedures to act as a numbing agent, and may be used in the short term to treat some heart conditions. Generally someone isn't "on" epinephrine; it is usually a one-time dose or a closely monitored series of doses.
